Once you have your plan, start the first step which is to clean the garage floor.A garage floor should be cleaned very well and the concrete surface should be a little rough so the epoxy can strongly bond to the surface of the floor. Use a broom to sweep off from the floor all the dirt and dust. An old paintbrush can be used to sweep out the corners. If your garage floor has paint on it already, remove its gloss by using a light sanding pad. Then, sweep off the dirt. If you want to know if your floor is totally clean, you can use a strip of duct tape. Stick the strip and peel it away.
If dust or particles are stuck on it, the floor needs another round of cleaning. Also any grease or oil can affect the outcome of epoxy adhesion. Check if the surface has water beading up when you apply a very small amount of coat. If water is beading up, you may need to use a degreaser. Several manufacturers offer different kinds of degreaser so you have to make sure that the product you use is of good quality. Apply the degreaser to the area where beading happens and then scrub with water and detergent. Re-test for water beads and keep doing the process until there are no more beads. For a bare or new garage floor, or a floor covered with clear coat, the floor should be further cleaned by etching the floor.
